Membership Spotlight: Meet Krista Orchard

What do you do at your current firm?

I am a Business Development specialist focusing on building and nourishing relationships with new and old clients. I identify leads and inform leadership of jobs worth pursuing, while keeping up to date with current infrastructure bills and goings-on in the area. I collaborate with team members across the country and keep communication with our clients open to ensure quality, predictability, and reliability across the life cycle of our client’s infrastructure and environmental projects. My favorite part of my job is event planning, connecting with new people, and exploring marketing techniques to showcase our value.

What inspired you to join SMPS?

I am new to the AEC industry, and I was told this was a great way to sharpen my networking skills. SMPS has been so helpful! I’ve been set up with a great mentor, and overall, everyone is so friendly and supportive! I appreciate all the tools SMPS has provided to help me be successful at my firm. The events are fun, too, and I enjoy meeting and learning from everyone I meet there.

What’s one thing about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I’ve been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for over four years. It’s allowed me the opportunity to travel and compete all over the world, and help me build the confidence and awareness every woman needs to carry themselves safely at home and abroad. My goal is to create a self-defense and women’s advocacy group for underprivileged women.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Sushi, ramen, or bulgogi

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment to date?

After four years of almost daily practice, blood, sweat, and tears, combined with strength and mobility training, I’ve proudly received my purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve got five (5) gold medals from competition so far, which I am also very proud of. It will take me another 5-6 years to reach black belt, and I am excited to prove to myself that I have the mental and physical strength and determination it takes to get there, all while balancing my professional life and personal relationships.
