Member Spotlight: Alina Houston
How do you make the most of your SMPS membership?
By doing EVERYTHING. I’ve participated in two great roundtables, attended both member & education events, attended two Pacific Regional Conferences (I even spoke at PRC in February) and just this year, I joined the Programs committee. Ultimately, the more you participate, the more you get out of your membership.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given in your career?
Just because you’ve never done something before, doesn’t mean you can’t. I stepped beyond my comfort zone a lot this year – between speaking at PRC and serving as the chairperson for the Programs committee, I’ve done a lot of things for the first time. It’s kind of intimidating to try new things, but it built a lot of confidence in my professional skills.
What is one of your favorite productivity tools, technological or not, that makes your work day easier?
Microsoft OneNote. All my notes are digital AND accessible via the app on my phone. I’ll always love a good handwritten checklist though.
If you could switch places with anyone for a day, who would it be?
Malia Obama because I want Barack to be my dad.
What is your favorite TV show right now?
Game of Thrones. I geek out on GoT – I just rewatched the entire series in preparation for the final season next month.
