Member Spotlight: Kim De Alba, CPSM

What is your favorite aspect of your current role?

My favorite aspect of my current role is the diversity of projects. Along with my marketing duties, I’m involved in employee experience, which encompasses recruiting, onboarding, and retention. I feel like I work with the most intelligent and creative people in the industry. So, it’s been fun doing internal communications in addition to external communications.

How long have you been a member of SMPS, and how do you stay involved?

I’ve been an SMPS member since I started working for Interface Engineering in 2006. Over the years I’ve been a committee lead, served on the Board of Directors (twice), served as a mentor, and have facilitated two roundtables. I usually find some way to stay involved, whether it’s assisting with the CPSM study group or organizing a roundtable.

Do you have any advice for new marketers?

Get involved with SMPS. The networking is extremely valuable to your career. It takes some time to learn about the AEC industry and your role as a marketer. Lean on your peer group. Share information. What you learn from SMPS programs, events, roundtables, and volunteering will help you grow into being a valued professional to your firm.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Would you still want to do that today?

When I was a child I wanted to go live with Jane Goodall and her chimpanzees in the jungle. That is probably not in the cards for me any longer , but I would go in a heartbeat if Jane called me! I have more skills now. I have teeenagers and work with engineers. Chimpanzees should be no problem.

What is one item you cannot live without?

I hate to admit that I probably cannot live without my phone only because it does so many things for me: It keeps me organized, I can see photos of my loved ones whenever I want, and keeps me entertained with audiobooks during my commute. However, it is frequently on Do Not Disturb mode to preserve my sanity.
