Spotlight on the Mentorship Roundtable
Contributed by Alexi Meuwissen, Director of Marketing at Bremik Construction
SMPS Oregon’s Mentorship Program pairs senior marketers with members who are new to the field or are trying to grow from an entry level to next level position. In addition to engaging in one-on-one meetings, members of the program regularly participate in group discussion. The group discussion topics this year are:
- Time Management/Balancing it All
- Elevating Yourself in the Workplace
- Developing Marketing Content
- Entering New Markets and Winning Work
- Interview Preparation
Discussing How to Create Quality Marketing Content
Here is a recap of a recent discussion facilitated by Allison Tivnon with ECONorthwest who came in and presented on developing marketing content:
Social Media Plans
When developing a social media plan it’s important to answer the following questions before diving in:
- Who are we inspired by?
- Who is doing it well?
- What content to post?
- How often should we post?
- Do we need to utilize every platform?
Avoiding Content for the Sake of Content
With all content produced, ask yourself “is it really reaching and influencing the people who pay us and/or reaching and influencing the people who influence the people who pay us.”
Developing a New Website
When looking to launch a new website, you should first identify:
- Your Advocates – the people in your firm who understand marketing and why you need a new website
- Your Blockers – the people who don’t understand what’s wrong with the current website you have
- The Big Cheese – those in the firm who people want to hear from and will help develop the content you need for the new site
Allison recommends sketching out a timeline between now and when the new website should launch, and identify what and when things need to happen along the timeline.
Making your Digital Presence a Recruiting Tool
Our group talked about Glassdoor, the online review platform for potential employees to learn more about your company by seeing real reviews from current and former employees. Allison argues that Glassdoor should be viewed more as a marketing tool than an HR tool – it’s on online presence that is marketing our company to future employees.
